Psychology is a fundamental science and a well known discipline all over the world. Discipline of psychology studies cognitive and emotional processes underlying human behavior in every sense. In other words, psychology is a “scientific field” which approaches to and studies human as a whole with his emotions, thoughts and behavior.

Psychology is also an “independent profession” in which various treatments aimed at changing human behaviors and solving problems are carried out by means of integrating information obtained from the discipline of psychology with particular abilities and skills.

Based on these aspects of psychology, the “scientist-practitioner” model has been adopted in the educational program presented at the Maltepe University Department of Psychology, like the other universities providing education in the international standards. This model is based on the idea of training students not only as “scientists” producing knowledge but also as “practitioners” who are able to transfer this scientific knowledge into the applied area and use it. The curriculum based on this model, covers theoretical courses on scientific method as well as practical courses and internships.

There are different subfields of psychology such as clinical, social, developmental, industrial and organizational, cognitive and forensic psychology. Graduates of Department of Psychology can study for master degree and hence, they can be a professional in one of the the given subfields. The Department of Psychology at Maltepe University offers graduate opportunities for MSc and PhD degrees in various subfields of psychology.

Today,  psychology is among the top professions developing rapidly. As it is known, almost all societal processes and problems encountered in society are related to human behavior. Consequently, there are quite a number of working areas of psychology. Psychology graduates can work in high schools, colleges and universities as academicians and educators teaching the discipline of psychology; as researchers who study human behaviour in the departments of fundamental and applied sciences in universities and research units of public and private organizations.
